Will Savage recently had the opportunity to present at ICARD 2024 in Halifax, sharing some of the important CCS research and development that MEM has been advancing. The talk was included in the Critical Metals and Tailings segment, which was a section of the Innovation and Current Issues discussion. It addressed the potential of mine wastes to sequester CO2 and the impact of mineralogy on the gas flux, presenting novel laboratory methods of measurement.

ICARD was an enlightening conference, it was good to see that climate change was included in several of the panel discussions. It was a great opportunity to learn about the innovative solutions to managing AMD, there were also many success stories shared. It is clear the mining industry is committed to ensuring each project provides a net benefit. A key takeaway relating to the sustainability to mining, knowing that is part of the problem and the answer, is that we must be proactive rather than reactive.
